Overview About Acne

Acne is a skin disease, which is an inflamed skin condition and usually occurs among teenagers during puberty.

Basically, acne occurs when the oil glands produce more sebum or oil than normal, which then cause the skin pores get clogged and become inflamed, that are allowing bacteria causes acne to grow.

Besides, acne also occurs because the pores of your skin become blocked with sebum or oil, dead skin or bacteria. It often causes spots, whiteheads, blackheads or pimples.

Factors Cause Acne

There are four factors that contribute to the development of acne:
  1. The skin produces too much oil, which clogs pores
  2. Dead skin cells building up, which has the same effect ( clogs pores )
  3. The presence of a bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes ( P. acnes ) in the pores
  4. A bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the skin, which also leads to rednesss
Acne is not a serious health threat, it is significant in an emotional and social sense. If you have acne, often you have less self-confidence, and this can affect your social life or even your productivity at work.

Learning how to stop breakouts before they happen is the key to keeping acne under control.

Although there's no sure way to prevent acne, there are many methods of treatment and prevention for acne, regardless of the cause.

The following tips can help to prevent acne and reduce the number and severity of breakouts.

1. Wash your face to keep it clean

Contrary to what you may have heard, acne is not caused by dirty skin.

Acne is caused by overactive oil glands in the skin and a build-up of oil, dead skin cells and bacteria, which leads to inflammation in the pores.

So, whether or not you have acne, it's important to wash your face twice daily to remove impurities, dead skin cells and extra oil from your skin's surface.

To help prevent pimples, it’s important to remove excess oil, dirt and sweat by washing regularly. Also remember to wash after exercising because sweat can clog your pores and make your acne worse.

This reduces inflammation and kills bacteria associated with acne formation. Don't forget to make sure to remove all makeup and dirt so it doesn't build up and clog your pores.

However, washing your face more than twice a day is not necessarily better and may make acne worse. Because over-washing the face may cause the skin to become dry, which can aggravate pimples.

Tips to wash your face:

Use warm, not hot, water and a mild facial cleanser or an alcohol-free cleanser. Using a harsh soap ( like deodorant body soap ) can hurt the already inflamed skin and cause more irritation.

Don’t wash your face with harsh cleansers that dry skin.

Rinse thoroughly and dry your face with a clean towel. ( Toss the towel in the laundry hamper, as dirty towels spread bacteria ). Also, use the washcloth only once.

Avoid scrubbing your skin harshly with a washcloth, an exfoliating glove, or loofah ( a coarse-textured sponge ). Gently wash it with a very soft cloth or your hands.

Applying an oil-free moisturizer after washing also can keep the skin from becoming too dry.

2. Don't touch your face and keep your hands off your face

Try to touch your face as little as possible because your hands encounter grime and bacteria during activities throughout the day. Because, each time you touch your face, some of those impurities may get transferred to your skin and may clog pores.

Not only can spread bacteria, you can also irritate the already inflamed facial skin. Never pick or pop pimples with your fingers, as it can lead to infection.

And also wash your hands frequently, to keep them clean from dirt.

3. Keep your hair clean

Oily hair can add to the oil on your face. When you got long hair, keep off from your face.  If excess oil in the hair travels to the skin, it can worsen acne.

Keep your hair clean by regularly washing the hair because it may help prevent acne from developing, especially close to the hairline. Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner.

Besides, watch what you put on your hair. Products such as fragrances, oils, pomades, hair gel or spray on the face, can clog pores and lead to acne. It also can irritate your skin if they get on your face.

Headbands that cover your forehead can encourage acne, because there are dirt and sweat.

4. Use right skin care product

Pay attention to your skin care product, hair product and makeup or cosmetic. Heavy, greasy products with cocoa butter, mineral oil or cold cream can worsen acne.

Skin care products contain oil can clog the pores. These products are usually intended for use on dry or mature skin that may not have as much natural oil.

Otherwise, use products that do not contain oil labeled non-comedogenic. Non-comedogenic means it should not cause acne. Besides, your makeup should be water-based, hypoallergenic and oil-free.

The last important little thing you may miss it. Always keep your facial care products clean, like makeup and facial sponges and brushes by clean it regularly with soap and water to prevent a buildup of bacteria, which could lead to breakouts.

5. Avoid foods cause acne

Some research suggests that some foods may trigger acne in certain people.

Foods with a high glycemic index may increase the risk of developing acne or make acne worse, such as sugary food and food high in carbohydrates. When your blood sugar rises quickly, it's increasing your risks of acne.

Also avoid food high in fat like nut and chips.

Otherwise, try to eat foods that may help prevent acne, like consume low glycemic foods, foods high in vitamins, fiber and zinc.

6. Reduce stress and get enough sleep

Stress may not cause acne, but it may make them worse because it often causes inflammation, which can make breakouts worse.

Research has shown that when you’re stressed, your body produces more oil-stimulating hormones.

7. Exercise regularly

Regular exercise is good for your body, including your skin. When you exercise, it can improve blood circulation, and also in your face.
